We say that despite recently focusing on ways to hedge stock portfolios against a broad market decline. After all, this bull market is some 10 years old, and many smart investors, as first-quarter earnings season is set to begin, are increasingly wondering if this is as good as it gets.

Concerns that the stock market has advanced too far, too fast, since its December lows have sparked a demand for defensive puts to hedge portfolios and stocks, which creates favorable conditions for one of our favorite strategies—the cash-secured put option.

The strategy monetizes fear. We have championed this rather boring approach for a long time because it works. Investors simply set aside enough money in their brokerage account to cover the purchase of the associated stock at the pertinent strike price. Then they sell the put. Many investors use this approach to extract higher returns on idle cash, and others regularly use it to get the options market to pay them to buy stocks.

Worries about weak iPhone sales were rampant. We advised investors to ignore the pessimism and instead sell a cash-secured put to take advantage of the parlor game that Wall Street likes to play with Apple. For a few quarters, or years, the Street bullishly promotes Apple and then bearishly frets that the company is primarily a seller of mobile phones.

This inevitably weakens the stock until something happens that reminds investors that Apple might just be more than the iPhone. The trade positioned investors to buy Apple stock at close to the week low. The company is also launching a credit card and getting into the entertainment business. The August expiration was chosen to pack some time premium into the put—and to give Apple a chance to strut.

The company is scheduled to report earnings on April Third-quarter earnings should be out in late July. Should Apple remain above the strike price, however, investors get to pocket the premium. So, rather than looking for plump puts with attractive premiums, focus on stocks that you want to own. One investor likes selling puts on Amazon.
